Principal’s Message

I am delighted to be the principal of Oxford-on-Rideau Public School.

This year has been full in disruptions, and yet the students continue to learn and have fun, and the community continues to find ways to support the school.

Working within the strict protocols of the health unit has challenged the staff and students to find new ways to create a sense of belonging while learning together.

Here is a little snapshot of how we are doing it: online grade 5 and 6 students can be heard reading along with their in-school classmates in literature circles; kindergarten students have devised multiple methods for catching a leprechaun; the grade 1 and 2 class has celebrated the 40th anniversary of Robert Munsch’s “Paper Bag Princess” by creating their own paper bag costumes; the grade 3 and 4 class is learning about Indigenous culture by planning Inuit Games in phys-ed.

Learning looks different this year, but children are showing patience and resilience amongst all the uncertainty.

We also benefit from unwavering support from our Parent Council and families.  They hold the history of the school’s traditions, and have been happy to pass them on to this new principal.  They also offer practical assistance, such as helping us to replenish our outdoor toys so we have enough for our cohorted groups at recess.  Enthusiastic parents have even found ways to volunteer by making plans to visit classes virtually.

In this difficult year, the school and its families have pulled together to give students the best possible experience.  I’m proud to be part of such an inventive community, and inspired to bring my own ideas to the table!
